Our 3-Chamber Cedar Bat House is handcrafted in Niagara, Ontario and designed to provide bats with a durable, comfortable roosting space. It combines Canadian cedar with fir and spruce plywood, multiple roosting chambers, textured interior surfaces and side ventilation for long-term outdoor use.

CWF Reviewed Design

Our 3-chamber bat house has been reviewed by members of the Canadian Wildlife Federation as part of its work studying bat house design in Canada.

The Canadian Wildlife Federation’s Canadian Bat Box Project examined the design features and installation conditions that help make bat houses more suitable for Canadian bats. Our design incorporates key features identified in their recommendations, including multiple chambers, ventilation, textured interior surfaces and generous overall dimensions.

Each bat house is hand-assembled in our Niagara, Ontario shop using materials selected for durability and outdoor use.

Installation

Proper placement is an important part of creating a suitable bat roost. For information about mounting height, sun exposure, location and other installation considerations, we recommend following the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s bat house guidelines.

Because each bat house is hand-assembled, please allow up to an additional 2 weeks before shipping.

Installation

Proper placement can make a big difference in whether bats use your bat house. For the best results, follow these guidelines from the Canadian Wildlife Federation:

  • Mount it 9–10 feet above the ground. Higher is fine, but does not appear to increase occupancy.
  • Choose partial sun for a single bat house. Aim for roughly 6–8 hours of sun per day.
  • Avoid full sun with a black bat house. Dark boxes can become dangerously hot, especially later in summer.
  • Mount it on a building when possible. If that isn’t practical, a pole is the next best option. Trees are generally less effective because branches can create shade, obstruct flight paths and provide easier access for predators.
  • Keep the approach clear. Avoid tall vegetation, branches, bright lights and other obstacles around the entrance.
  • A nearby water source can help. Bat houses located near water may be easier for bats to find and use.
  • Leave it in place long term. Bat houses may not be occupied immediately, and CWF notes that longer-established houses are more likely to be used.
